Happy Year of the Dragon!

In honor of the Year of the Dragon which began yesterday, I have taken the liberty of posting a blog entry on how you can celebrate the holiday from the comforts of your own home in Nova Scotia! With 5.4% of Halifax's population being of Chinese, Filipino and Southeast Asian decent (5.4% is a high percentage for a city the size of Halifax), it's important to acknowledge these holidays.[1]

Unlike the New Years we celebrate in Canada and other places around the world, the Chinese New Year takes place over several days and is quite possibly the most important family gathering time for people who celebrate it. People travel from all over the world to be with family, exchange money envelopes, eat copious amounts of food, burn incense, attend parades and other public gatherings, but most importantly, be with their loved ones. This time last year I was fortunate enough to spend my holidays in Taiwan where I got to witness first hand some of these traditions. This year, I stuffed my face with some Wok Box in Dartmouth Crossing (HIGHLY recommended).

For those who are looking to spice up their dinner table around this time of year, I recommend heading down to one of the many Asian markets around the HRM to pick up some dumplings and rice noodles. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and these little grocers are packed with interesting supplies. Check the bottom of the page for some locations (there are quite a few). OR if you feel that taking on a challenge like this would be too much, take your family to one of the many restaurants that specialize in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean or Thai cuisines. I've listed a few of my favourites around the city below as well.

Whether it's putting together your own family dinner with a little Asian flare or heading out to one of the numerous and diverse Asian-inspired restaurants around the HRM and the province (that's right, there's more selection outside the HRM), I encourage you to take the dragon by its horns. Happy Year of the Dragon!
