Paper or Plaskett

There's a reason that I love this town. Well there's several but my favourite at the moment is  Joel Plaskett. Sonic Concerts just announced that the ECMA  nominated Joel Plaskett will be giving a show March 28 at Olympic Hall (my favourite new venue BTW). Tickets are $30.00 (plus tax and annoying fees) and $35.00 at the door. Just to give you that extra edge on getting tickets, pre-sale tickets can purchased here. The password is MONKEY.

We Love The Candy Show

From Wikipedia

I want to be best friends with Candy Palmater.

If you haven’t seen the stand up comedian’s TV show on APTN which is filmed here in Halifax then you’re missing out. She’s the new edgy multicultural version of Oprah.

Now, I had heard of Candy for awhile. I follow her on twitter and I’ve watched several youtube videos so I knew that she was a funny, funny lady but... I was two shows in and I had already laughed so hard I almost peed myself. WARNING!! If you’re a little emotional like me, some parts will also make your eyes well up with tears.

Team Wintersleep VS Team Matt Mays

UPDATE: You can now vote for Fan Choice Video and Entertainer of the Year at http://thechronicleherald.ca/ecma

That's the heated debate... who do we want to win the Fan Favorite Video of the year at the East Coast Music Awards? We're still undecided but we basically narrowed it down to two... And we love them both...

Matt Mays Has A New Video...

With the True Blood wolves and Jesus stuff....

"Take It On Faith" is his new single and we love the video and can’t stop watching!

We cannot help but spread the love for the Cole Harbour native and his music by sharing the vid. We're not sure if you love it as much as Cocaine Cowgirl or more...

He's also got an up coming show at the Halifax Forum on Thursday, November 15th. Tickets are $30 and available online at Ticketpro here

The Juno nominations are out and here is how our province’s musical talent made out this year...

Her Name is Kay!!

Posting your music on youtube can make or break you; ask Justin Bieber.... or Sarah Black. That was a risk Cape Breton’s singer/ rapper Kay Boutilier was willing to take and I’m pretty sure she’s glad she did. She’s now signed to the same label as Lady Gaga! She also fresh from LA where she produced her first album. Thankfully, she seems to be taking the Justin Bieber route... success wise.
WARNING: She’s not your typical bluegrass folkish rockish type of singer from the traditional Nova Scotian school of musical talent. She’s from the new wave of independent Hip-Hoperish Urban style such as Classified and Ghettosocks. Whoa.. yeah that’s a lot of -ishs but you get what I mean. No fiddles for Kay!!

NovaFamous: Radio, Radio

If you never heard of Radio Radio then you know little to nothing about the Quebec music scene. That’s okay because neither do I. In fact I even forgot to include them in our Juno’s post.... The worst part is, they label themselves as an Acadian French rap group and I’m an Acadian! Possibly a very out of touch Acadian???

Okay, sooo...I know what your asking yourself... SOO what does all this group have to do with Quebec’s music scene? Just so happens Radio Radio have been blowing up Les Chart Qubecois for the couple years. Two of the three rappers hail from the region of Clare down in the Baie Ste-Marie along the Acadian Shores of Nova Scotia. That’s right, two big Vedettes (stars) in La Belle Province are Nova Scotian made. The other guy is from Moncton so he’s not that far off either...

NovaFamous: 2 Cups and a Super Bowl

Super Bowl weekend is almost here and do you know who the only person to ever to have won the Vanier Cup, the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl? It’s Nova Scotian Tyrone Williams. I’m not going to lie, football is not my forte. Like most Canadians I’m a hockey fan. I’ve gone to a quite a few Saint Mary’s Huskies games and I do get the very basics. And by basics I mean, Williams is a wide receiver and I had to wikipedia it to find out what exactly that position entails.

Williams was born in Halifax and played both football and basketball at the no longer in existence Queen Elizabeth High School. (He more than likely practiced on the Halifax Commons so I wonder what he thinks of The Oval?) He went to the University of Western Ontario where he won the Vanier Cup along with the Ted Morris Award as a Mustang. For those how are football illiterate like me, the Ted Morris Award is the Vanier Cup’s MVP, Vanier Cup being Canadian universities Super Bowl. He was also a two time Canadian All-Star and Four time Ontario All-Star.  After graduation he was off to the NFL where he technically won a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys in 1993 even though he never actually dressed for the game. He was suppose to play but due to other players injuries they had to dress different positions (or something like that).

After that he then headed to the CFL where he joined the Toronto Argonauts. Footnote: Argonauts were a group of heroes that sailed around in a ship ...well, being heroes in Greek Mythology such as Hercules and Orpheus. (something I didn’t have to wiki, yay!) Anyhoo, in 1996, he helped them win the 84th Grey Cup. Apparently the weather wasn’t the best, it was -10c and heavy snow fall...brrr  Take a look at the video from a Grey Cup Classic Moment and watch the players slide through the snow to a touche down.

NovaFamous: Google’s Counsel

We’ve decided to dedicate a section of the blog to Nova Scotian born or raised individuals who are leaving there marks in this big wide world. I bet you thought we’d start off with the Golden Boy, aka Sidney Crosby. Well, we’re not....but we still love Crosby (Go Pens!).

We actually decided to begin with an individual we didn’t even know existed until we came across an event for Digital Nova Scotia in which he will be speaking at here in Halifax. We discovered that one of Google’s own VPs (the people who make this blog possible) is a Nova Scotian.

Don Harrison is his name. His official title is something like Deputy General Counsel at Google (assuming this has something to do with law) and he does something with Google Venture (whatever that is). His profile states he’s one of Google’s lead negotiators. Other than he has graduated from Dalhousie, worked in a Toronto Law firm and looks kind of pasty in his photo to be living in California, we don’t really know that much about him. A Google search didn’t bring up much about him other than he writes for their Public Policy Blog and that’s about it. Hopefully the papers will cover more of his life story the closer we get to the Digital Nova Scotia event because I for one am intrigued and excited to learn that someone in Google is a Nova Scotia.
