As the finale to our weekend of concerts we checked out Wintersleep on the Granville Green in Port Hawkesbury Cape Breton (you can read all about the Granville Green in our past post) . We are HUGE Wintersleep fans and felt it would be a perfect way to cap off a weekend of music, beaches and road tripping

Wintersleep in PHK

Matt Mays was at the Jubilee....What Else Can I Say
1. Matt Mays comes out with a hat on, takes it off and then puts
it back at some point near the end of the show.
2. He always climbs something.
3. You become BFFs with everyone around you.
4. You must know the words to ALL of his songs and if you don't your new best friends will disown you.
5. You realize that he is probably the best live performer you will ever see... unless you’re lucky enough to see, let's say Neil Young and then he’s probably a very close second.
This is the photo story of what happened at the Jubilee in New Glasgow Saturday night.

The Night We Met the Sheepdogs at Jubilee...
Literally and figuratively....
I’m approximately 5’7”and I came to their shoulders. They
were soo much taller than I expected and they also surpassed all my other
expectations in every way.

Team Wintersleep VS Team Matt Mays
UPDATE: You can now vote for Fan Choice Video and Entertainer of the Year at http://thechronicleherald.ca/ecma
That's the heated debate... who do we want to win the Fan Favorite Video of the year at the East Coast Music Awards? We're still undecided but we basically narrowed it down to two... And we love them both...

Matt Mays Has A New Video...
With the True Blood wolves and Jesus stuff....
"Take It On Faith" is his new single and we love the video and can’t stop watching!
We cannot help but spread the love for the Cole Harbour native and his music by sharing the vid. We're not sure if you love it as much as Cocaine Cowgirl or more...
He's also got an up coming show at the Halifax Forum on Thursday, November 15th. Tickets are $30 and available online at Ticketpro here!

In The Dead Of Winter
Winter. That's right, I said the "w" word. When you think winter in Nova Scotia, what comes to mind? Snow, dark cold nights, blinding storms? What about music? Did you know that every year during the last weekend of January, a music festival is held?
In the Dead of Winter was founded by Heather Gibson, Jill Barber, Rose Cousins, Jenn Grant and Amelia Curran. Over the years, the organizers have changed but the goal remains the same. Bringing together various acoustic artists to help showcase their genre and give them the chance to perform to a wider then normal audience in a professional setting.
This year's festival is going to be taking place from January 25 - 28 at various venues throughout Halifax. While the festival does welcome all ages, please note that some venues are 19+. For additional venue and ticket information please see
While I would love to take in all the shows, this year I'm limiting myself to artists who's work I'm unfamiliar. Some shows I hope to check out are:
Breagh MacKinnon

Is there anyone else in the line-up I should look into?

Her Name is Kay!!
Posting your music on youtube can make or break you; ask Justin Bieber.... or Sarah Black. That was a risk Cape Breton’s singer/ rapper Kay Boutilier was willing to take and I’m pretty sure she’s glad she did. She’s now signed to the same label as Lady Gaga! She also fresh from LA where she produced her first album. Thankfully, she seems to be taking the Justin Bieber route... success wise.
WARNING: She’s not your typical bluegrass folkish rockish type of singer from the traditional Nova Scotian school of musical talent. She’s from the new wave of independent Hip-Hoperish Urban style such as Classified and Ghettosocks. Whoa.. yeah that’s a lot of -ishs but you get what I mean. No fiddles for Kay!!

Halifax M Fest
Mark it down on your calendars, in your iphones and your blackberries... Halifax Pop Explosion (HPX) has created a new off shoot festival they named Halifax M Fest and it’s happening on Sunday August 7th at Alderney Landing on the Dartmouth Waterfront. Yes, the Library parking lot! So far it’s only a one day event with doors opening at 1PM. It’s described as all ages with a licensed area... sooo a BEER TENT (I’m assuming).
Oh I forgot the best part... Headliners: Broken Social Scene!
Yay! If you’ve never seen them (thought they’ve been to Halifax a few times) you need to catch their show. They are amazing live. Youtube has plenty of vids from live shows so you can check 'em out. Their live performance list includes appearances on Letterman, Jimmy Fallon and CBC’s Q.
The other bands listed thus far include....

NovaFamous: Radio, Radio
If you never heard of Radio Radio then you know little to nothing about the Quebec music scene. That’s okay because neither do I. In fact I even forgot to include them in our Juno’s post.... The worst part is, they label themselves as an Acadian French rap group and I’m an Acadian! Possibly a very out of touch Acadian???
Okay, sooo...I know what your asking yourself... SOO what does all this group have to do with Quebec’s music scene? Just so happens Radio Radio have been blowing up Les Chart Qubecois for the couple years. Two of the three rappers hail from the region of Clare down in the Baie Ste-Marie along the Acadian Shores of Nova Scotia. That’s right, two big Vedettes (stars) in La Belle Province are Nova Scotian made. The other guy is from Moncton so he’s not that far off either...

Great Big Sea .... of People!!

If their was ever a band who knows how to read the Halifax audience so well, it’s Great Big Sea. As always, their concert turned out to be like going to a huge ass, high energy kitchen party, minus the liquor of course (although I did see a couple of flasks). The crowd was into every song and jumped up and down to most of the tunes. When you’re packed like sardines that’s all there is room enough to do. The band came back for two encores. Their were signs in the crowd asking the band to play the Haligonian favorite “Old Black Rum” and the crowd were not going leave until they heard it. Personally, I think that was a well calculated move on the bands part. They didn’t want us to leave either....

Nova Scotia @ the Junos
The Juno nominations are in! And seems that Nova Scotia did fairly well especially with all the Beiber Fever going around. The Junos are celebrating their 40th birthday this year and rapper Drake is the host for the ceremony in Toronto. A few of our artist got nominations in the “big” categories such as Classified’s nomination for Single of the Year for “Oh Canada” which really excites us since some of us here at the blog may have been part of the crowd in his video which was shot in Halifax at Granville Square.
Harbour’s Matt Mays contributed. And yes, there is someone else that famous that comes from Cole Harbour other than King....oops I mean Sidney Crosby. Okay, okay... Matty Mays may not be Land of Croz famous but we love him just the same.
Halifax rapper Ghettosocks is up for Rap Recording of the Year and I believe he wins the most awesomest rapper name ever award as well. He was one of the artist that I wanted to go see during Halifax Pop Explosion but didn’t get out to. Hopefully the fact that he is up against the host, Drake doesn’t work against him.

And Chester’s Old Man Ludecke is nominated for Roots Traditional Album of the Year: Solo for My Hands Are On Fire and Other Love Songs. Old Man Ludecke get a nod for awesomest name of the year as well because his name is... well, just fun to say! Now to be honest, I haven’t really heard most of his new album but “I Quit my Job” is still my favorite from 2 albums ago.
There are others as well that have Nova Scotia DNA (NSDNA), like members of Holy Fuck who are from Yarmouth, NS and nominated for Electronic Album of the Year. Luke Doucet was born in Nova Scotia and Nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year and of course Sarah McLachlan who was born in Dartmouth but doesn’t like us so we don’t really count her as our own. Then there is Meaghan Smith who is originally from London, Ont but began her music career here in Halifax so Music Nova Scotia loves her.
I’m disappointed that Wintersleep and their album New Inheritors wasn’t nominated for anything besides their Art Director Graeme Patterson being nominated for Record Package of the Year. WHAT?? They just played Letterman...
Congrats to all our Nova Scotian Nominees, let’s bring home the … crystal.

East Coast Music Awards Nominations!
Yes. It’s that time of year folks, award season! Though we may be far away from the city of angels, here in Halifax, aka Haliwood, we have our own set of nominations that have just been released. That’s right- nominations for the East Coast Music Awards are OUT! I’m not sure WHY since the ECMAs are only in April. They haven’t even announced the Oscar nominations for Feb yet but hey, I guess they need time... to... to... Le sigh! Yeah I got nothing. It perplexes me to why they announce the nominees so freaking early. None the less, I am super excited that The Trews are nominated for four awards this year including Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year ...even though they didn’t release an album. AND who could forget Haliwood favourites The Stanfields who are up for four nominations too, as well as Wintersleep and Slowcoaster! Nova Scotia’s music FTW! We’re all proud of ya! Click here for the complete list. We’ll have more to come on some of the artists. Congrats and good luck to all the nominees.
In case you missed it, Wintersleep were on Letterman on Jan 14th and preformed their single “Weighty Ghost” so here it is below...
